Audrey and Evan

May 25, 2024

Welcome back, everyone! Today, I am thrilled to share a truly enchanting wedding that took place at the breathtaking River Farm in Alexandria, VA.

River Farm is renowned for its elegant gardens set against the graceful backdrop of the Potomac River, making it the perfect setting for Audrey and Evan's whimsical wedding.

Flower Facts

As you all are aware, I believe that floral arrangements are one of the most important aspects in bringing a couple’s vision to life. I handpicked a variety of flowers that not only constructed the elegant theme they dreamed of, but also complemented the beautiful River Farm gardens. Here’s a closer look at the flowers that made this wedding so special:

Bridal Bouquet

The bridal bouquet consists of a compilation of peonies, ranunculus, campanulas, sweet peas, and delphinium.

This pastel palette included soft pinks, purples, and blues, creating the dreamy, whimsy look I wanted to achieve.

Peony

I chose to add peonies for their lush, full blooms, which added a touch of romance and sophistication to the bouquet.

Some cultures view peonies as a symbol of good fortune and happiness within a marriage. They are also believed to be a way to ward off evil spirits and bring blessings to the household they protect.

Campanula

Also known as “bellflowers”, these bell-shaped flowers added part of the whimsical touch that the couple wanted.

Not only do campanulas reminisce tiny fairy bells, but folkloric legend says that fairies planted these flowers and that the bellflowers ring in the wind, but it is a whispering sound that can only be heard by the those who could see the fairies.

Ranunculus

With their intricate layers and elegant color, these ranunculus flowers brought a sense of elegance that created a mesmerizing, rose-like appearance; without upstaging the surrounding blooms like a rose would.

During the Victorian era, ranunculus, sometimes referred to as buttercups, would be sent by admirers to those they admired as a way to make their feelings known.

Delphinium

A cousin of the ranunculus, these small blue blooms produced a classic feel that draw the eye and create a sense of grandeur.

While many theories for the origin of the name “Delphinium”, one popular theory holds that Apollo, the Greek god of the sun, favored these blossoms. Those who worshipped Apollo would place delphinium on alters in his temples, the most popular of which was named Delphi - hence, the name!

Sweet Pea

Sweet peas, commonly referred to as “Queen of the Annuals”, are beloved for their soft, delicate petals and intoxicating fragrance. Their gently ruffled lavender petals and sweet scent brought an air of romance and nostalgia, which perfectly encapsulated the fairy garden vibes.

Native to Sicily, sweet peas were said to have symbolized blissful pleasures, good wishes, and kindness.

Atmosphere

The River Farm venue itself already sets the stage of atmosphere with its lush gardens and scenic views of the Potomac River. I wanted to focus on enhancing this natural beauty with floral arrangements that felt organic and effortless, while also capsulizing Audrey and Evan’s vision. Here are some highlights:

  • Ceremony Arch: The ceremony arch was adorned with cascading blooms that complimented the bridal bouquet without upstaging it. This created a breathtaking focal point where Audrey and Evan exchanged their vows. To discern the decorations from the bouquet, white roses and hydrangea intertwined with greenery and other flowers were used.

  • Reception Tables: Each table was decorated with delicate centerpieces featuring ranunculus, sweet peas, and campanulas, designed to look as though they had been freshly picked from a fairy garden.

  • Bridesmaid Bouquets: The bridesmaid bouquets were made with the same complementing flowers as the ceremony arch, which allowed the bridesmaid to stand out without upstaging the bride.
